Game Mechanics seem to be a key element in providing a joyful gameplay. Therefore it is crucial to be able to rely on an efficient general conceptual framework when you plan or discuss any particular game mechanics. There have been offered several widely varying propositions how to theoretically model such a general framework. Instead of offering another such model/framework/theory I will try to answer which requirements such a framework ideally would have to meet. I will do so by comparing three prominent frameworks (Fabbricatore 2007, Sicart 2008, Adams and Dormans 2012).
